A HAND grenade was found in Tadcaster yesterday.
Police and firefighters set up a 200-metre safety cordon on Station Road shortly after 6.45pm, while they waited for the Bomb Disposal team.
A member of the public had brought the suspicious device to the police and fire stations.
It was found in his neighbour's garage, where it is believed it had been since 1957, a spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said.
The spokesman added: "The Bomb Disposal team determined that the device was an inert hand grenade which they took away safely."
