A LARGE pile of unwanted furniture close to York Minster has been cleaned up, but it was not a fly-tipping case, City of York Council said.

The furniture, including a sofa, wardrobe, mattress and cushions, was left in the gardens surrounding the Boer War Memorial in Duncombe Place, opposite the Dean Court Hotel.

A council spokesman said: "It seems there were some crossed wires.

“A resident who had booked a bulky waste collection was asked to leave the items outside.

“The furniture was then mistaken for fly-tipping and a crew was called to clear up.

“The items have now been removed".
