MORE than a dozen drivers were arrested for drink-driving last weekend, five of whom were more than twice the legal limit.

North Yorkshire Police said 14 people were arrested in “the busiest 48 hours” of the summer drink/drug driving crackdown so far, with four arrests between 1am and 2am on Saturday, June 17.

One woman arrested earlier in the campaign - Carla Smith, 46, of Ferguson Road, Walkington, appeared at York Magistrates’ Court on Monday and admitted driving while almost four times the legal limit.

Police said Smith was stopped on Sunday, June 4, at around 8.20pm in Haxby by an officer, due to her driving on the A1237 York ring road. After failing a roadside breath test, Smith was taken to York police station, where she provided a reading of 133 microgrammes per 100ml of breath.

Smith was given a three-month suspended prison sentence, banned from the roads for 33 months. She was also ordered to pay £200 in associated fines.

Sgt Andy Morton said: “This sentence sends a clear signal that if people choose to break the law and drive under the influence of drink or drugs, officers are out on the roads and will catch you. Be assured, when we do, you will face a hefty fine, lengthy ban and the possibility of a prison sentence.”
