AFTER all that has happened, it is surprising to read Theresa May still described as a “good leader” (Letters, June 19).

True; until June 8, she had the largely uncritical admiration of 80 per cent of the British press, who are now struggling for explanations.

She has been criticised for her poor people skills. But this should not be the deciding factor. Much more serious is her disastrous judgement.

Apart from her irresponsible, frequently-repeated mantra “no deal is better than a bad deal”, this is most evident in her choice of Ministers to lead on Brexit.

Why would any sensible Prime Minister choose the expensively-educated Boris Johnson to represent us abroad? His apparent ignorance of basic EU facts and gratuitously insulting tone make the UK government look incompetent.

Then there is David Davis, a man so uninformed about the Union he wants us to leave that he was telling us before the referendum that we could negotiate separately with individual EU countries, which was never true.

Finally, there is Liam Fox, a True Believer, who apparently really does think that “crashing out” without a deal would be fine.

These woeful decisions make sense only if Brexit is seen as an internal Tory Party problem, rather than an issue for every one of us.
