85 years ago

Motor thieves had carried out a daring raid in the early hours on the village post office at Tockwith.

Postal orders, War Savings Certificates and money to the total value of more than £170 had been taken in the dawn raid.

The police were understood to be following up a clue, after it had been reported that two tins of petrol had also been taken from a garage in Wetherby.

In York, Bilton Street school children had dressed in the fashion of 100 years ago, as part of their school centenary celebrations.

Pictured in Birdsall at the Middleton Hunt Puppy Walk were judges Lady Grimthorpe and Mrs Wickham Boynton snapped taking great pleasure in selecting dogs from the hound section to be shown at the Great Yorkshire Show.

50 years ago

A three-course meal of soup, braised steak and onions and a choice between apple pie and gooseberry crumble was the highlight of an open day on Pocklington airfield.

Visitors were invited to look round the buildings occupied by the East Riding food flying squad, which had been manned by 32 regular volunteer WRVS members.

The idea of the open day was to permit local people particularly women to see how the squad worked.

An appeal had been launched by the Selby and district scouts who were hoping to raise money for the upkeep of the headquarters and equipment.

Stepping out in style with the opening of its second shop on the corner of Jubbergate and Newgate Market was the old established city footwear firm of A Watkinson Ltd.

The stores new décor was predominantly white, with touches of black, and rich red carpeting.

20 years ago

One of Ryedale’s most popular bands had taken to the roads in style in a bid to raise money to buy new uniforms.

Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band had toured the major towns and tourist attractions of Ryedale in two classic buses and three vintage vans, each time performing a formal sit down concert for around 30 minutes.

New Tory leader William Hague had announced further appointments to his new Shadow Cabinet after giving top jobs to four of his former leadership opponents, Michael Howard, Peter Lilley, John Redwood and Stephen Dorrell.

Mr Hague also stunned Westminster by appointing veteran Thatcherite Lord Cecil Parkinson as new party chairman.
