NEW mobile CCTV cameras will be deployed by Selby District Council to catch fly tippers illegally dumping waste.

Specialist cameras, which can record high quality video in any light, will be installed at fly tipping hotspots around the region this month, as part of the Don’t be a Waster – Reduce, Reuse, Respect campaign.

The authority is also working with North Yorkshire County Council to raise awareness of waste that is free to dispose of at the local Household Waste Recycling Centres in the district.

Cllr Richard Musgrave, Executive member with responsibility for housing, leisure, health and culture, said: "These cameras will help us crack down on criminals who think this behaviour is acceptable. The footage will clearly capture and identify those who continue to fly tip.

"These people think they’re disposing of the evidence – but our cameras will catch them. Our message is simple – our cameras are watching you and we will prosecute you."

Residents are also reminded they are responsible for their rubbish – even if someone else fly tips it illegally.

A spokeswoman said: "If you pay someone to take it away who is unlicensed and they dump it illegally, you have broken the law and will face prosecution".
