85 years ago

It was a buttery success all round for Miss Ward, who had won a silver medal for the best exhibit of butter at Otley show.

Miss Ward, from Foggathorpe, had also secured first award for her duck eggs.

In Bridlington the entire complement of his Majesty’s cruiser Godetia, were entertained by the Mayor of Bridlington Councillor J A Dew.

The Mayor and Mayoress lunched on board the cruiser and afterwards inspected the ship.

Delightful weather favoured the second day of the Knavesmire Grand Yorkshire Flower show and Gala.

The flowers still looked fresh, with no signs of being affected by the scorching heat over the last couple of days and exhibitors looked forward to its continuation, as good weather was a good omen for the gardening professional and nurseryman.

As flowers and shrubs always look their best when they open themselves to sunshine.

50 years ago

The Earl of Harewood had resigned from the office of Chancellor of York University on “personal grounds".

The Archbishop of York, Dr Donald Coggan, who was Senior Pro-Chancellor, was to communicate the Earl’s decision to the University Court after only a year in service.

According to a professor of biology the British housewife’s menu of “fish on Fridays” and “Sunday roast beef” could be endangering her family’s health.

Professor Gemmell from Keele University, said that although there was nothing intrinsically wrong with this “stereotyped” menu, if it was inadequate in any way, it would be difficult for the defect to be remedied.

Fat babies were also under scrutiny with their weight problems been blamed on “big meals, lots of puddings, pies and cakes”.

The head of Britain’s Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Basil Hume, made a return visit to Ryedale to celebrate the centenary of one of the area’s churches.

The Archbishop of Westminster celebrated mass at St Chad’s Church in Kirkbymoorside before visiting Ampleforth Abbey to reminiscence about his time spent in Ryedale.

His tale about riding pillion on a motorbike from Ampleforth Abbey to Kirkbymoorisde raised a chuckle among the 100 or so parishioners who had gathered at St Chad’s.

And the first company to occupy the new £1.4 million business park scheme a firm of marine consultants had been named and launched in traditional maritime fashion with a bottle of the finest champagne by Selby district councillor Anne Hobson.
