PLANS for a huge housing development in York have taken a step forward.

British Sugar has submitted a further planning application to City of York Council in connection with the former sugar beet factory site, off Boroughbridge Road. This application is for detailed planning permission for the main access points into the site, from Millfield Lane and Boroughbridge Road, and the new road across the former Manor School site.

The proposals replicate the access arrangements that form part of the outline planning application previously submitted by British Sugar for the redevelopment of the site to provide up to 1,100 dwellings, community uses and associated infrastructure.

York Press:

The sugar beet factory closed in 2007 after 80 years in operation.

The agent for the latest application, Neil Jones, a partner with Rapleys Town Planning, said: "The purpose of this latest application is to ensure that the terms of the agreement between British Sugar and City of York Council relating to the land required for the new access road can be satisfied.

"British Sugar is continuing to work closely with City of York Council to secure the necessary permissions at the earliest opportunity.

"British Sugar remains committed to the sustainable redevelopment of the site to provide much needed new homes for the city of York."

According to the latest application, the former Manor School school buildings would need to be demolished, at least in part, to build the link road, which would comprise a dual carriageway.

In addition, the application says the link road would include a foot/ cycleway and substantial landscaping, including grass verges and hedgerow planting to provide an attractive entrance into the site.
