THERESA MAY has been shown to have appalling judgement over the last few weeks.

Her decision to increase NI contributions for the self-employed in the budget and then doing a rapid U-turn; her decision to call an election she didn’t need to call and losing her majority; her decision to attack the elderly over the dementia tax; her disastrous decision not to appear in the leaders’ debate.

All these show her total lack of critical judgement.

However, her latest mistake dwarfs all these.

To form a government by relying on a party that 97 per cent of the electorate could not vote for, a party that opposes gay marriage and abortion, is utterly irresponsible.

Furthermore, bringing the most extreme Unionist party into Government could act as a red rag to the remaining Republican paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland, leading to an increase in terror.

If it leads to Sinn Fein pulling permanently out of the power-sharing agreement, it could jeopardise the entire peace process.

That process, largely ending violence in the province and beyond, has been one of the greatest successes of the last 40 years: for Mrs May to put that at risk is unforgivable.
