A VOTER says he turned up to a York polling station to take part in today's General Election - only to be told he had already voted.

Greg Winrow, 48, of Goodramgate, has called for a reform of the voting system following the problems he experienced at the station, situated at the Unitarian Church in St Saviourgate.

He said an official checked his name on an electoral list and said it was crossed out, indicating he had already voted.

"It was quite upsetting," he said. "I was excluded from the election.

"There are only two possibilities - one that someone pretended to be me, which would be a criminal offence and I think unlikely, or two, it was human error.

"No one was asking voters for proof of identity, which would allow someone to impersonate me, and this seems archaic in the 21st century and should be changed."

He said he voted on a special pink slip and told that in the event of a very close election result, a high court judge could be involved in determining whether his vote should count.

A spokesman for City of York Council said: “We are investigating why the gentlemen was told he was recorded as having already voted when he visited the polling station.

“In line with standard practice, he was able to vote using a tendered ballot paper. We’ve had no similar issues reported to us today."
