A MAN has appeared in court charged with rape and sexual assault after a night out in York.

Luke Wayne Jackson, 27, of Hutton Avenue, Darlington, appeared at York Magistrates' Court on Saturday afternoon.

He is also charged with stealing his alleged victim's iPhone 6 mobile phone.

The court heard Jackson is accused of raping a 19-year-old student at an address in the city after they met at Kuda nightclub, in Clifford Street, in the early hours of Monday, May 29.

Jackson was given conditional bail until his next court appearence, which will take place at 10am on Monday, July 3, at York Crown Court.

As part of his bail package he must live and sleep at his Hutton Avenue address and must not enter North Yorkshire or the city of York.

The 27-year-old was also given an electronic tag curfew from 8pm to 8am and must make contact with his local police station every day between noon and 2pm.

He was told he must not contact the complainant or witnesses.

The teenager is receiving support from specially trained police officers while the investigation continues.
