FIGURES have revealed that Yorkshire is the county that is home to the most fish and chip shops in the UK.

To coincide with today's National Fish and Chip Day, the National Federation of Fish Friers have shown Yorkshire boasts 1,700 chippies.

It was also revealed that one in five Yorkshiremen and women visit the fish and chip shop every week, with more than half taking the fish and chips home to eat as a family meal, and 80 per cent of the county’s population visiting the chippy at least once a year.

Friers from the Wetherby Whaler, that has branches in Guiseley and Pudsey, and chippies in Whitby and Bridlington also visited the Chelsea Flower Show last week to show of Yorkshire’s fish and chips.

Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said: “Yorkshire fish and chips are the best in the world, and we were delighted to showcase them at Chelsea last week.

“There’s no better way to round off the half term break than a trip out for traditional fish and chips.”

Caroline Murphy, director at Wetherby Whaler, added: “Yorkshire has a fine tradition of serving the best seafood in Britain and our fish and chips in particular are world-famous!”
