I’M looking forward to an exceptionally unusual occurrence tomorrow.

The community group Save Windmill Lane Playing Fields, which I chair, is holding a protest walk starting at 10am at the David Lloyd Club, and we’re walking to Haxby Road Playing Fields.

Why? Because York St John University have applied to build houses on these playing fields, and offered the Haxby Road facilities as a replacement, something that planning guidance says should be no more than 15 minutes walk away.

Our walk of three miles will highlight how ridiculous this “replacement” is. We estimate it will take an hour, so far that some supporters cannot walk all the way with us.

The unusual occurrence is that it is possible that all four candidates in the Hull Road Ward by-election, united in their opposition to this development, will all be attending the start of the walk.

Having all four local candidates together must be a first for York, and shows the strength of feeling against concreting over these fields and open space.

We welcome anyone to join us for the walk, just turn up at 10am tomorrow morning.
