WORK costing nearly £1 million has started on a well-known York city centre building to transform it into a new high-end restaurant.

Restaurant chain Gusto is the latest venue set to hit York’s busy restaurant and bar scene, and is due to open a new branch in Little Stonegate this July.

The major investment - which is set to create more than 60 jobs - will see part of what used to be the Mulberry Hall shop converted into a new restaurant.

Managing director of Gusto, Sue Crimes, said: “We’re so excited to be opening in York and join the area’s thriving food and drink scene.

“York is a perfect location for our clientele who want delicious food, fantastic drinks and glamorous atmosphere.

“Mulberry Hall is a well-known building in York, so we are going to convert the venue into our brand style, while maintaining and restoring many of the original building features such as the original brick work and beautiful windows and doors.”

The 4,000 square foot venue will seat up to 120 diners and include separate bar and dining areas.

The decor of the new site will follow Gusto’s signature ‘sparkly’ vibe, including high end finishes, atmospheric lighting, olive trees, art deco glass screens and traditional features.

“We’ve really thought about the design of our restaurants to ensure they have the right atmosphere and match the excellent food, drinks and service that we are well-known for,” Sue said.

“Our restaurants in Leeds have proven extremely popular with locals and tourists and we hope for the same success in York.”

Sue believes that the atmosphere Gusto offers sets it apart from other restaurants.

“The venue is glamorous, yet relaxing and family friendly making it the perfect place to visit for a delicious lunch with the kids and then return for a romantic meal in the evening,” she added.

Gusto, which is part of the Living Ventures Group, currently has 16 restaurants across the UK.

The new York site is part of the company’s ongoing plans for growth.

The award-winning restaurant offers a classic and contemporary menu, with dishes being freshly prepared on site.

Best-selling menu highlights include spaghetti pesto with green beans, sun-dried tomatoes and rocket leaves and freshly homemade pizzas.

Other highlights include an an extensive drinks list, a ‘make your own pizza’ children’s menu and a selection of options on the lunch menu.
