TEN years have passed since a devastating fire ripped through a supermarket in Selby.

The blaze tore through the Somerfield supermarket and Wilkinson store throughout May 27, 2007, causing an estimated £2 million of damage.

About 60 firefighters tackled the blaze at its height, and police said “the loss of life could have been catastrophic”.

Martin Green and Matthew Kneafsey, who were 16 and 17 at the time of the attack, were jailed in 2008 following a trial for starting the fire.

Despite their ages, Judge Jim Spencer QC, lifted the ban on identifying them, “so that the young people of Selby know exactly what lies in wait for them”. Photographer Eric Foster, who took pictures of the fire, said: “This was one of the biggest blazes in the town at the time.” The stores reopened by the end of 2007. The Somerfield is now a Sainsbury’s.
