GARDEN waste totalling 100,000 tonnes has been collected from residents in the Selby area since collections started.
Selby District Council began collecting garden waste in 2001, and announced the milestone figure - equivalent of 1.25 million people, 55,000 saloon cars, nine Eiffel Towers or 850 blue whales - this week.
The garden waste service was initially trialled with 2,200 households around the district, and has since expanded to cover more than 31,500 households in the area.
Cuttings, leaves and trimmings from the fortnightly green bin collections are recycled into high grade compost for local farms and businesses.
Julie Slatter, director of corporate services and commissioning at Selby District Council, said: "It is wonderful that the green waste collection has been so successful and to hit the milestone of 100,000 tonnes collected during the Don’t be a Waster campaign’s focus on green waste is tremendous. I’d like to thank our residents for supporting the scheme and making a real difference to our local environment."
