COLOURFUL children have raised money for a quiet reading area in memory of their friend and classmate.

Pupils at Westfield Primary School wore all colours of the rainbow as part of a day of fundraising in tribute to Katie Rough.

The seven-year-old was found with serious stab wounds in a field off Alness Drive, Woodthorpe, in January this year and died later in hospital.

Headteacher Tracey Ralph said pupils and staff had carefully considered a tribute for Katie and voted on the reading area.

She said: "We wanted to have a fitting memorial so we could remember Katie.

"One of the ideas was to have a therapy dog because there's one at Huntington School and we were visited by one.

"However, for various reasons, they weren't sure it was the right idea because if they animal died the children would be devastated.

"We gave this some serious consideration and decided to build a quiet reading area in the playground."

Once the money is raised the circular gazebo will be built in the playground and used by children who want to read quietly or remember Katie.

The idea has been backed by Katie's family, who have pledged some of the money raised for them in the wake of Katie's death towards the school's memorial.

Mrs Ralph added: "The rainbow day theme is something the family chose.

"At the time of Katie's passing the family were using rainbow logos so it was really for them.

"We have spoken to the family about their wishes and they are comfortable with what we are planning."
