SUPERMARKET chain Tesco has put plans on hold to raise funds to help replace equipment at a play park destroyed by an arson attack.

Yesterday (see below), The Press revealed that Tesco stores in York and in Driffield and Market Weighton were planning to hold charity events and collections this Friday and Saturday to give a fundraising campaign in aid of Jubilee Park, in Fangfoss, East Yorkshire, a financial boost.

But Tesco's fundraising efforts for the park have been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. The events will now take place on June 16 and 17.

Overnight on May 6, arsonists targeted play equipment at the park, and it is expected to cost £40,000 to replace it.

A SUPERMARKET chain has got behind a campaign to raise £40,000 to replace equipment at a play park destroyed by an arson attack.

Tesco managers recently visited Jubilee Park, in Fangfoss, East Yorkshire, after hearing about the attack by vandals, which happened overnight on May 6.

Lyn Grant, chairwoman of the committee that runs the park, said the managers were "appalled" to see what had happened and have stepped in to help.

The Northern Local Marketing Team from Tesco have donated £1,000 towards replacing the damaged wooden play structure.

They are also holding charity events at their stores this weekend.

David Cooper, from Tesco, said: "The stores in Market Weighton and Driffield are working together to support Jubilee Park at Fangfoss following the recent arson attack which destroyed children’s play equipment".

A number of Tesco stores are holding charity events and collections this Friday and Saturday, including outlets in York. These are the stores in Clifton Moor and Tadcaster Road and the Express shops in Goodramgate, Piccadilly, Ousegate, Strensall, Huntington and Acomb. The Tesco stores in Market Weighton and Driffield are also supporting Jubilee Park on Friday and Saturday.

Lyn said: "We are extremely grateful to Tesco for their generous donation and support they are giving us, and the potential to make some more money this weekend.

"We would also like to thank all those individuals who have also contributed to our Jubilee Park Phoenix fund, either through the JustGiving page or other means. We will continue in our fundraising efforts until new equipment can be bought.

“In the meantime, we would like to remind visitors that Jubilee Park is still open. All the charred bark and damaged equipment has been removed and the park looks lovely."
