SEA cadets in York took to the water for a rowing regatta and put in a valiant performance.

York Sea Cadets entered a team in the Sea Cadets District Rowing Regatta at Wykham Lakes near Scarborough recently.

The team, consisting of cadets Ethan Wyer, Lysander Penrose, Oliver Elder, Joe Hester and Toby Carter, are a junior team but due to one of the cadets turning 15-years-old before the national finals, they had to row against open boys teams from Filey and Scarborough.

Paul Cunniff, a volunteer for the unit, said: "It was very windy and a bit choppy out on Wykham Lakes but our York cadets rowed valiantly and put in a good effort.

"Sadly they were beaten by two and five lengths respectively by the other experienced teams consisting of boys aged 16 and 17."

The York unit have recently received a donation of a rowing machine.

This means that the cadets, who practice on the River Ouse through the summer, can also practice rowing during the winter and poor weather to build strength and skill.

York Sea Cadets is a charitable organisation for boys and girls aged 10 to 18-years-old and undertakes a variety of activities including off-shore sailing and powerboating, fundraising and charity events, Duke of Edinburgh awards, BTEC and other qualifications.
