AN iconic design from the swinging sixties walked down the catwalk again at the Principal Hotel York yesterday.

Kimberley Sadler took inspiration from Yves St Laurent’s famous geometrical dress for her end of year fashion collection and interpreted it in her own way.

She was among students from York College who presented two fashion shows in the hotel next to York Railway Station.

The afternoon show was principally aimed at local schools, several of which sent pupils to see the many varied creations.

The evening show was more for the parents and loved ones of the students as well as those interested in fashion.

Apart from the Sixties, an inshango bone probably used as a measuring tool by prehistoric man in Upper Paleolithic time, the plight of migrant people whose boat shipwrecked off the Maltese coast, eating disorders and distorted views of body image, and 1920s sportswear and architecture provided inspiration for the young fashion designers.

All were either studying for a BA Hons degree course in fashion design or an extended diploma level 3 fashion and clothing course.

The clothes varied from unisex children’s clothes to showgirl costumes and ranged from the practical to the extravagant.

Some students chose to make political points - one held a large sign in her hand saying “This is about humanity not religion” and another had newsprint words saying “peace, love and hope” on a t-shirt.

All the students had both designed and made their collections.
