YORK’S Assize of Ale has raised a record £2,250 for charity.

The Guild of Scriveners, which revived the medieval custom of testing the standard of the city’s ale 25 years ago, has presented a cheque to The Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Dave Taylor, for his charities.

Cllr Taylor said he was ‘pleased and surprised’ that the sum was the largest ever raised by the Assize.

“It was great fun,” he said. “Thanks to all the sponsors and organisers as well as those who joined us testing the ale in the pubs of York.”

The event, held last August and led by the Sheriff of York, started with a declaration on the Mansion House steps and continued with councillors and supporters visiting pubs, sampling beers and collecting donations.
