A TEEN is living out his dream - as York's youngest bus driver.

As a child Josh Bickerstaffe always dreamed of becoming a bus driver and seeing North Yorkshire every day by road.

It is a dream he has made a reality after passing his test, which is believed to have made him the city's youngest bus driver.

“I’ve always wanted to do it,” said the 18-year-old from Osbaldwick.

“From a young age I have always been fascinated about being on the road, meeting people and new passengers.

“Sometimes passengers who see me ask how old I am and they are quite surprised.

“It’s not often you get drivers as young as me.”

The former Archbishop Holgate’s School pupil now drives the 29 and 31X buses for Stephensons of Easingwold after passing a demanding theory and practical test.

Drivers must take three theory tests and two practical tests before they are allowed to get behind the wheel by themselves.

“Sometimes passengers who see me ask how old I am and they are quite surprised when I tell them, but you pick up the same people everyday and you get to know them well,” added Josh.

Josh turned 18 last July and joined the company in January, and already has his sights set on taking coach trips abroad when he turns 21.

Jane Foster, general manager at Stephenson’s of Easingwold, said: “I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback on Josh and know how much he enjoys his work.

“It is a dynamic and challenging role, every day is different, this is why we invest heavily in all our staff, preparing them and continuing to invest in their roles whilst working within the business."
