A TEAM of charity supporters from York have been given a national award for their work.

The York Christian Aid workers were given the Diamond Award by the charity on Saturday for their commitment to supporting the world’s most vulnerable people.

The group has raised more than £1.5 million for the charity since 1987, by organising concerts, quizzes, sponsored walks and fundraising collections

Among those receiving the award, were Margaret Birch, Jill Johnson, Enid Bowlby, Maurice Vassie, Wendy Johnson, John Whitworth, John Goodrich and Nick Nightingale, all from the York district.

Nick, chair of the York Christian Aid Committee, said: “Christian Aid leads the world in its work to tackle poverty and injustice.

“It is their vision for a better world where all are welcome, where no one should go hungry, and everyone deserves life in all its abundant richness, that has inspired me to volunteer my time We are called to love our neighbours as ourselves and know that this challenge extends beyond borders, race and religion.”

The award was presented at an event in Belfry Hall on Saturday.
