A TEENAGER who shares his name with a famous fictional wizard will spend the night in prison.

Harry Potter, 19, of Mill Lane, Acaster Malbis, was remanded in custody at York Crown Court today and will be sentenced tomorrow.

He pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to possessing a class B drug with intent to supply.

The court heard, police stopped Potter on his moped as he travelled along Temple Lane, Copmanthorpe, on January 19.

York Press:

Officers had stopped him to carry out a routine check, but when they noticed a strong smell of cannabis he was searched and three wraps of cannabis and £70 in cash was found on him.

His mobile phone was analysed and text messages were found to have been sent from Potter's phone to around 20 customers at York College, where the 19-year-old was studying to be a car mechanic.

Text messages referred to him selling cannabis in the ground's of the college before, during and after lessons.

Robert Galley, prosecuting, said Potter made between £20 and £30 every one or two weeks, and would use the money to buy drugs for himself.

Neil Cutte, defending Potter, said: "He assures me he has learned his lesson and he has not smoked cannabis since.

"He comes from a law abiding, respectful family."

The Honourary Recorder of York, Judge Paul Batty, remanded the teenager in custody overnight to 'reflect' on the sentencing.

He said: "There are serious features to this case.

"Dealing cannabis in college as you were doing over a period of seven months while having the client base of about 20 people who were no doubt from the college is, in my judgement, serious."
