85 years ago

A very successful Jumble Sale Pound Stall had been held in aid of Easingwold Parish Church Sunday school.

With an assortment of goods generously given by the townspeople, and a steady supply of volunteers, it had been noted that a very useful sum had been raised.

York Commercial Travellers’ Association held its monthly meeting at the Coach and Horses Hotel.

Whilst over at York Castle during the Eastern Ainsty Petty Sessions a local policeman, described how a traveller from Leeds had been fined for stopping by the road side to eat an orange, the peel of which he then threw on the road.

The reason behind the fine according to PC Gatenby was that the peel was a danger to traffic and to pedestrians, particularly in the event of rain.

50 years ago

Harold Wilson announced to a cheering group MPs in the House of Commons that “Britain had made an historic decision which could well determine the future of Britain, of Europe and of the world for decades to come”.

On agriculture he warned of far-reaching changes and said we must recognise that the European Community’s policy was an integral part of the EEC and we must come to terms with it.

What to do… was the question for some 700 boys and girls leaving summer to start work.

The Evening Press had the answer with a six-page supplement “which could prove a valuable guide for those who had not yet decided on a career”.

Another of York’s church towers was on the move. This time it was at St Michael’s, Spurriergate.

Labour leader Tony Blair was preparing to move into 10 Downing Street after sweeping to victory in the General Election by a landslide majority.

In the largest swing in his party’s history 43-year-old Mr Blair had brought 18 years of Conservative rule to an end.

It was to be life upstairs for one North Yorkshire house-keeper who had scooped more than over £3.2 million on the National Lottery.

The 57-year-old woman who had not been named planned to share her winnings with her husband.

Flamingo Land was to have its very own pale joey, an albino wallaby, which had been one of three born at Kirby Misperton Zoo.
