DANNY Baker bounds on to the stage towards the end of an extended tour which began in Leeds in February and never planned to come to York.

Each night takes a slightly different direction - tonight starts with his beloved Millwall FC buying their very best player, Eamon Dunphy, from York City in 1966.

Baker's colourful journalistic and writing career spans 41 years in print, TV and radio and, as with his BBC 5Live programme, for much of the lengthy first half he tells us that "the show will start soon" as he darts around his early life.

The evening is based on family photos - and we only make it to the second photo by the end of the first half.

He has a wealth of material, some very funny - like when he screwed his sock to the floor - and much of it quite interesting. By the way, he's given up a QI appearance to be in York tonight.

There's plenty of name-dropping, but just as he's more interested in football supporters than football, it's the minutiae that provides inspiration.

A skilled raconteur, the show is uneven at times, but he knows his demographic and an appreciative audience listens intently to stories of football, fireworks, music and success built on "dumb luck".

The second half includes audience questions and he frequently reminds us "that's another story for another show" and, concluding late into the night at 11.15pm, it's clear there's more still to come.
