YORK’S city walls will soon see work start on £1.5 million worth or repairs and improvements.

The city council already puts around £100,000 a year into routine monitoring and inspection. The extra cash was agreed in February this year, for a five year programme of works to help make sure the 1,900 year old walls can be preserved for years to come.

York Press:

Micklegate Bar is getting a new roof and new gates - which will mean the museum can stay open when the walls have to be closed - and Monk Bar’s sunken and twisted steps are to be repaired.

Smaller towers like Tower 39, Tower 32, Tower 2, the Anglian Tower and the Red Tower are all getting repairs and restoration work.

Cllr David Carr, leader of City of York Council, said: “Over a million people take a walk through 1,900 years of history on the walls every year and we hope through this investment many more visitors will continue to enjoy them.”
