YORK MP Julian Sturdy has used the last Prime Minister’s Questions before the election to push for transport investment.

Mr Sturdy, MP for York Outer, asked Theresa May to invest in infrastructure, saying York was a “fantastic place to live, work, and start a business” but needs transport infrastructure to fulfil its economic potential.

“Will the Prime Minister continue to improve infrastructure to secure a strong economy and deliver for regions like Yorkshire?” he said.

Theresa May spoke of several investments in York - £2.2 million for highways, £1.6 million for transport, and £1.3 million for the iTravelYork initiative. But she said the country could only invest in infrastructure if it has strong and stable leadership securing a strong economy.

Later, Mr Sturdy said York risked becoming “a victim of its own success”. “We are expanding and that will bring transformative economic effects for the wider region, but a priority must be to ensure our transport networks are able to support and encourage future growth.”

The A1237 is not fit for purpose and contributing to congestion in the city-centre, and housing development in the north of York will only increase the strain, he said. A railway station in Haxby would also reduce traffic pressures and improvements to the East Coast Mainline are necessary as passenger numbers grow, he added.
