A DATE has been set for a court hearing into controversial plans for Clifford’s Tower.
The Tower’s Judicial Review will go to trial at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday, May 3, and a verdict is expected to be given on the same day.
Independent city councillor Johnny Hayes launched the court fight after English Heritage got planning permission for a shop and visitor centre built into the base of the motte.
He said: “I could not believe that such a wonderful and internationally important monument and local landmark could be treated in this way.”
In January High Court Judge Mr Justice Kerr decided the case should go to trial before a senior judge. He will hear the case in Leeds, and decide whether the planning process was flawed.
A crowd funding website has so far raised more than £14,000 towards anticipated costs of around £50,000. The additional costs have been paid by Cllr Hayes and his wife Frankie Hayes out of their own savings.
