A WOMAN was injured when fencing blew down on to her in a freak gust of wind this afternoon in York.

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service said paramedics were called to the incident in Layerthorpe at 2.30pm, when a blustery hail shower was blowing through York.

A spokeswoman said a woman was taken to York Hospital with a head injury, which was not believed to be serious.

A local resident, Bob Allison, who said he witnessed the incident while driving past, said the fencing was standing at roadworks in Layerthorpe, near where a new Travelodge and new link road were being built.

He said he saw ambulance crews trying to assist someone under corrugated sheet metal fencing.

"They were scrabbling around lifting it up to try to get someone out," he said.

"I think it was a pedestrian - it  must have been someone on the footpath."
