YORK'S Gillygate was closed today for up to a fortnight, forcing motorists and buses to take a lengthy diversion.
The key section of York's Inner Ring Road has closed in both directions to allow Yorkshire Water contractors to carry out improvements to a water main - just eight months after the road closed to allow the same company to carry out emergency sewer repairs.
The closure means anyone travelling between the city centre and York Hospital is facing a detour via Bootham, Clifton, Water Lane, Burdyke Avenue, Crichton Avenue, WiggintonRoad and Clarence Street.
Yorkshire Water has said it's aware of the impact the work will have and urged people to 'bear with us whilst we carry out this important work.'
It said a three inch water main, originally laid in 1910, needed to be dug down to and relined to improve the taste and appearance of drinking water in the area.
