A BREAST cancer survivor held a ballroom dance event for charity.

Nicola Gant, of York’s Bluebird Care, and her staff held a Come Dancing event at Melodie Park in Wigginton Road, including a cha-cha-cha lesson for beginners.

Attended by 80 people, it raised £725 for York Against Cancer.

Nicola said: “My husband Andy is a qualified dance teacher and we thought this would be a bit different. And so many people love Strictly.

“We both dance at the Jean Harvey School of Dance; Jean trained Andy and on the night of the ball she helped with the teaching.”

Nicola had breast cancer in 2009 and, although she’s recovered, she knows through experience that not everyone is as lucky.

The York branch of homecare service Bluebird Care, where Nicola is the director, has looked after about 500 people since it began in 2011, including terminally-ill patients.

Julie Russell, of York Against Cancer, said: “People had a great time and raised a lot of money for our fight against cancer. We can’t thank Bluebird Care and everyone who danced the night away enough for their fantastic efforts.”
