A SPORTING event for people undergoing treatment for kidney failure will take place in the city next month, it has been announced.

The Dialysis Games will see people compete in sports including archery, badminton, boccia, bowls and cycling - the only entry requirement is that you undergo dialysis or you’re the relative of someone who does.

The idea behind the event at York St John University Sports Centre in Haxby Road is that people who might assume they are not able to take part in sports are offered support and inspiration to get involved.

Shannon Clay, a spokesperson for the event, said: “It’s all about inclusivity.

“We’ll have people who are very fit despite dialysis, and able to take part in more serious sports, but you will have others giving the sports a go for the first time.

“It’s going to be an open and friendly day, it’s not just about sport, there will be something for everyone to get involved.

“Just come along and have a go. Everyone is friendly. It doesn’t matter what your capability is, it’s a fun day for everyone.”

Held on May 21, from 11am to 7pm, other sports will be on offer, including walking and normal paced football, karate, new-age kurling, table tennis and tennis. Other more sedate activities include pilates, tai chi and yoga.

Medals can be won in some categories and there will be a tombola and raffle prizes.

Families can take part in egg and spoon races, snakes and ladders, a mini-obstacle course and musical theatre. There will be a bouncy castle, stalls and food and drinks. For more, and to get free tickets, find Dialysis Games 2017 on Facebook.
