YOUNGSTERS dressed up as their favourite superhero and rode their bikes and scooters to school as part of the Big Pedal challenge.

It is the first year that Haxby Road Primary Academy has taken part in the national competition, organised by the Sustrans charity.

The school is part of the Bike It project, working with Sustrans to encourage children, parents and staff to cycle, walk and scoot to school. Haxby Road pupils donned their superhero outfits to raise money for Sustrans., and enjoyed a Bike It breakfast and scooter skills sessions throughout the day.

Helen Suter, from the school, said: β€œIt went really well. We had amazing support from our parents and students.”

The Big Pedal 2017 has seen participants across the UK leave their cars at home and get on their bikes and scooters for their journeys to and from school.

Sustrans is currently working intensively with 18 York schools to promote walking, cycling and scooting in partnership with i-Travel York
