AN award-winning pop-up cafe is returning this weekend to support another good cause in York.

Team Lifestyle Cafe was formed two years ago to enter North Yorkshire Police’s Lifestyle contest.

After winning a top prize, the five youngsters involved have continued to raise money for causes including flood relief, the Jorvik Viking Centre, Max’s Mission and Cancer Research UK.

So far more than £4,000 has been raised.

Now 14-year-old Aidan Robertson, his brother Ethan, twins Jimmy and Lellie Dalgleish - all aged 12 - and Luke Smith, aged 11, are donning their aprons to help fellow Millthorpe School pupil Lydia Mellen, 15.

Lydia was born with liver disease and underwent a life-saving transplant aged six.

She won a 5km cycling time trial and road race in her age group at the British Transplant Games last year and has now been selected to the World Transplant Games.

All athletes have to fund their own participation and proceeds from Sunday’s cafe will go towards the £2,000 Lydia needs to raise to compete.

A donation will also be made to Leeds Children’s Hospital.

TLC member Luke Smith said: “We all go to the same school as Lydia and we really admire what she is doing.

“We want to help her and holding a pop-up cafe is a good way of doing it.

“It is also nice to get the whole community involved and it is good fun as well.”

The youngsters, joined this year by Dec Dalgleish, eight, organise and run each cafe themselves, with help from friends and parents.

They arrange and collect donations from local businesses and also contribute to the baking, as well as waiting on customers.

Sunday’s cafe will offer soup, sandwiches, cakes, tea, coffee and other refreshments - both homemade and donated - in return for a donation.

The event will be held at 128 Knavesmire Crescent, York, from 11am to 3pm.
