TRAVELLERS are being warned they may face delays and disruptions because of engineering work on the railways this Easter.

Over the bank holiday Easter weekend Network Rail will be working at Micklefield and closing the line, causing disruptions for both the York to Leeds and Selby to Leeds trains.

People are being urged to check what services are running before they travel as some services will not be running, while others will have to take diversions.

There will be bus replacements between Leeds and Church Fenton for some services; while the Selby to Leeds trains will be entirely replaced by buses.

Paul Barnfield, regional director for Northern rail, said: “The Easter work at Micklefield is a vital part of Network Rail’s project which will pave the way for our own modernisation programme.

“Once complete, this work will complement other improvements taking place across the region, including the refurbishment of all Northern trains and the introduction of 281 new, purpose built carriages, and will help us provide a rail service fit for the 21st century.”

The work - which Network Rail said will take 101 hours - is the first step in major upgrade project for the Transpennine route from York to Manchester.

Rail bosses way that work will mean faster, more frequent and more reliable services across the North of England.

While the junction is being upgraded, extra work will be done on track alignment through Micklefield station as well as an extension on Platform 2 so it can cope with longer trains in the future

Network Rail’s Jeremy Winsper said they had chosen to do the work at Easter when there are usually fewer people on the railways.

The junction at Micklefield is the point at which trains from Leeds head either north to York or east towards Hull, but services to Hull will not be hit during its year as UK City of Culture.
