WHAT with HALO and NEON over at Clifton Moor, it seems office conversions are becoming the latest thing in York.

And here we have another one, this time the ground and first floor of a landmark former flour mill in Navigation Road, York, which many consider to be York’s finest industrial building.

Consisting of five stories and a nine-storey water tower, Rowntree Wharf used to be one of the largest flour mills in Europe. It was designed by Walter Pent and founded by Henry Leetham in 1860 between the river Foss and Wormald’s cut to tower over the once slum district of Hungate.

How things have changed in this city.

The wharf was originally supplied with grain by barge to the mill and when in 1935 it became Rowntree and Co’s Navigation Warehouse it instead received consignments of cocoa beans. Gradually the building fell out of use, as road transport replaced river barges, and in 1989 the whole building was converted into flats and offices by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Recently the Foundation sold Rowntree Wharf and now some of the offices are undergoing conversion into 30 luxury apartments in this quiet and tranquil riverside setting in the heart of the city.

All the apartments will come with an exceptionally high specification combining cutting edge technology with traditional quality. We are promised a mix of apartments including some studio apartments starting from only £115,000 with one bedroom apartments from £165,000. All apartments have secured garaging, which is a real rarity for such a central location.

Rowntree Wharf’s latest lease of life is due for a full launch in May with first completions being expected by autumn, although early reservations are now possible through the agents.

This is a truly unique development, your chance to tuck into York’s confectionery history at a very reasonable price in fact.
