SEVERAL main roads in Tadcaster are to be closed all day on Saturday, April 29, to allow for the Tour de Yorkshire women’s race and the second stage of the Tour de Yorkshire men’s race to start safely.

North Yorkshire County Council says the vast majority of the race route will be shut under rolling road closures, typically lasting for up to an hour per race.

But to allow for the installation and removal of race infrastructure and ensure the safety of spectators and riders, it will be necessary to close or restrict parking on several roads, said highways assistant director Barrie Mason.

“Tadcaster bridge will be closed from 5am to 8pm,” he said. “A signed diversion will be in place for vehicles using the A64. Pedestrian access will be maintained across the bridge, except for a period of 20 minutes before to 20 minutes after the start of each race, and for a short period in the afternoon to allow for the safe removal of race infrastructure.”

Also closed from 5am to 8pm will be Commercial Street, Mill Lane, Bridge Street, High Street (Bridge Street to Chapel Street), Kirkgate and St Joseph’s Street.

Streets which will be affected by rolling closures include Chapel Street, High Street (Chapel Street to St Joseph’s Street), Stutton Road, Woodlands Avenue, Station Road and Wetherby Road.
