PROPOSALS have been unveiled for a new holiday “village” in Ryedale.

The plans for the site at the disused Spaunton Quarry include 50 bespoke timeshare houses, cottages and apartments, together with a central clubhouse with leisure and sports facilities.

Architect Chris Carr, who made a presentation to members of the North York Moors National Park last week, said: “The proposals that we have submitted described and illustrated an exciting concept for the redundant quarry at Spaunton.

“We are not making a planning application at this stage, but seeking advice to inform and guide our deliberations.

“We felt that our initial presentation was well received. This is a unique hidden site, ideally located midway between Pickering and Helmsley, with access off the A 170 and totally enclosed by woodland.

“It offers an opportunity to create a very special tourist development that would have no negative impact upon the National Park nor the surrounding landscape.

“While we do not underestimate the planning difficulties, we believe that the scheme I described would regenerate an unused derelict site, greatly enhance tourist facilities and make a major contribution to employment and the local economy.

“It’s not an easy concept to put across, but in essence it ticks all the boxes, not least that of making a major contribution to the National Park itself.”

George Winn-Darley, of the Spaunton Estate, said:“Ever since quarrying commenced in 1840, Spaunton Quarry has provided jobs for local families.

“This new proposal would allow the site to continue to contribute to local employment.”

A spokesman for the North York Moors National Park Authority said: “We have been approached by the owner to ask for planning advice and we have said if we do get a planning application for that proposal we would support National Park policies which are in place to protect the National Park landscape.”
