ACOMB Ladies celebrated winning the title with a 3-1 victory over Canalside Terriers.

The Tangerines had been crowned champions of the Yorkshire Women’s Hockey League division two seven days earlier but still showed no mercy against a Terriers side needing points to avoid the drop.

Things were looking uncomfortable when the Terriers took the lead against the run of play but Kiera Woods levelled the scores just before the break and Acomb never looked back. The champions pushed forward and had a number of chances from penalty corners which either went adrift or were cleared off the line by the visitors.

Skipper Kerry Woods put Acomb ahead with a terrific reverse stick strike and Hannah Yoward wrapped things up near the end with a neat finish. Acomb finished the season six points clear of second placed Pocklington who finished their campaign with a 3-0 win at Pudsey.

In the Yorkshire Men’s Hockey League, Acomb finished the season with a 3-2 victory over Wakefield III.

With little at stake, Acomb took took the opportunity to play around with their options and moved defenders into attack and vice-versa.

David Bell opened the scoring following a pass from James Graham-Brown.

The visitors replied almost immediately despite the best efforts of Paul Wright and Stuart Baxter at the back. Goalkeeper Craig Brown made a number of good saves before Bell restored Acomb’s lead. Wakefield squeezed in an equaliser but Nick Linfoot secured all three points when tapping home. The victory maintained the Tangerines seven point advantage over relegated City of York V.

Acomb II finished their campaign with a 4-1 defeat at lowly Boston Spa III in division five north. Skipper Jonny Brown’s clever penalty corner flick was scant consolation.
