A SCHOOL in York has created an unusual but good-natured leaving present for a much-loved head teacher.

Sheena Powley will step down as head teacher at Lord Deramore’s Primary School next week, after 21 years in charge, to spend more time with her family.

Rather than giving her a leaving present, she asked that the parents and teachers association set up a JustGiving page to help raise money for a sensory room in the new school building.

Vanessa Greenway, from the parent-teacher association , said: “Many parents and pupils, from past and present, have asked if there is a collection for Mrs Powley, so they can show their appreciation.

“Mrs Powley has respectfully asked that, if people wish to make a contribution, she would like the money to go towards equipping a sensory room in the new school. A sensory room is a specially designed space which combines a range of stimuli to help individuals develop and engage their senses. These can include lights, colours, sounds, sensory soft play objects and aromas all within a safe environment.”

A sensory room can cost between £3,000 and £8,000 and helps students with learning difficulties, developmental disabilities or sensory impairments while also providing a safe and calming space for children who are struggling with their emotions or experiencing anxiety.
