YORK Liberal Democrats have named their candidate for a upcoming council by-election in York.

People in Micklegate ward are expected to go to the polls soon, after Labour councillor Julie Gunnell announced her intention to stand down after 10 years of service.

The Lib Dems have now announced retired civil servant Aileen Hingston will fight the by-election for them.

Aileen has lived in Micklegate ward for 25 years, and her career involved health and social care, refugee issues, and economic statistics.

She said: “I love living in York, and particularly Micklegate with its fantastic heritage and green spaces. Since retirement I have enjoyed contributing to the local community, such as by volunteering in a charity shop.

“If elected I will continue the York Liberal Democrats’ strong record for protecting frontline services.”

The ward had one of the highest Remain votes in York, Ms Hingston claimed, but residents are being let down by the national Labour party over hard Brexit.

Micklegate ward has three councillors, currently one independent, one Green party, and one Labour. In the 2015 election the highest placed Lib Dem candidate came in 11th place with 2.6 per cent of the vote. Ms Hingston polled 13th, with 1.6 per cent of the vote.

A date for the by-election has not yet been set.
