ONE of the men who took the Blitz back to Germany has been presented with France’s highest military honour.

The French government granted D-Day veterans with Legion d’Honneur as a way of honouring those who fought and risked their lives to secure France’s liberation during the Second World War.

And Douglas Petty was a flight engineer on Halifax and Lancaster bombers, serving with Canadian 429 (Bison) Squadron at RAF Leeming in 1944 and 1945.

He travelled back to the base from his York home – and received a standing ovation from his family, friends and RAF personnel as the station commander, Group Captain David Arthurton, presented him with the medal.

“I’m so proud to receive this award, especially in front of my daughter and granddaughter,” he said.

“When I found out I was entitled to the medal I was very surprised. To receive it here at RAF Leeming is very special.”
