85 years ago

An appeal to help old horses in Egypt had proved to be a great success thanks to the York Branch of the RSPCA and The Yorkshire Herald.

Speaking at the RSPCA’s annual meeting Colonel Cape thanked the “Herald” above a flurry of applause, for collecting a considerable amount of money which had been remitted to the Society who hoped to purchase old war horses so they could be humanely destroyed.

Staff at Selby Olympia Oil and Cake Mills were taking advantage of full time employment, thanks to receiving an order for a trawler and tug keeping the yard occupied for another two months.

And the first Easter visitors had arrived in Bridlington with many more expected over the weekend. Booking prospects looked good for boarding-houses, with extra car parking facilities been provided in almost every part of the town.

Visitors were now just hoping the fine weather continued.

50 years ago

Members of the Pickering Evening Institute had been congratulated on another successful exhibition at Lady Lumley’s School.

The display of art, cookery, flower arrangements, woodwork, dressmaking, embroidery and crafts were all proof of another successful year of over 600 students.

Once more a very big question mark hung over the future of Heworth Golf Club after years of the York Corporation who owned the land hesitating to make a decision on its development.

The rumour mill had spread amongst the Club members hinting that the land was to be used for a £240,000 extension of Queen Anne Grammar School.

20 years ago

Even a traffic jam failed to dampen the spirits of soccer legend Jack Charlton.

Big Jack was spotted enjoying himself sat on the banking with a pair of binoculars, watching what was happening in the middle of the traffic clogged A64.

When he came back down, he signed a few autographs then got back in his car and started playing some country music.

Comedy duo Cannon & Ball presented their “new show concept” at the Rock Church, Priory Street, York. Bobby and Tommy, who lived near Selby, held ‘An Audience With Cannon & Ball’ where members of Tommy’s congregation could meet and talk with the stars.

And Pickering Musical Society planned to stage The Sound Of Music for the first time in 23 years.
