ACOMB Ladies are celebrating promotion after sealing the division two title in the Yorkshire Women’s Hockey League.

Georgie Wood scored a hat-trick in this weekend’s decisive 7-1 victory over Thirsk. The win finally secured top spot after a gripping battle with rivals Pocklington and Hull University.

Wood settled the early nerves with a goal after five minutes following a one-two with Jenna Allinson.

Hannah Yoward doubled the lead after Kerry Woods won a free hit.

Woods then made it 4-0, beating four Thirsk defenders and smashing the ball home from the edge of the D.

The Tangerines had victory in their grasp but the home side pulled a goal back in the 26th minute from a short corner.

Acomb were awarded a short corner on the stroke of half time and, with two Thirsk defenders sent to the halfway line for running out early, Woods slipped the ball to Wood for her second goal of the game.

Head coach Richard Crossland’s half-time address worked a treat and Acomb extended the lead to 5-1 when Sian Klukowski set up Woods.

Acomb controlled the rest of the contest but the home goalkeeper was in impressive form.

Wood, however, completed her hat trick from a short corner and Sally Fairweather set up Klukowski for the seventh goal in the final minute.
