DETAILED plans have emerged showing how a care company plans to demolish a York pub to make way for a new residential home.

As The Press reported earlier this month, care company Crown Care has agreed to buy the Carlton Tavern in Acomb from current owners Marstons Pubs.

Now a planning application has been made, revealing in more detail the Crown Care plans to demolish the existing pub building, and replace it with a 79 bed care home with 22 parking spaces, cycle racks and gardens.

York Press:

A design and access statement drawn up by IDP Partnership for Crown Care shows the plan is for three suites, 24 deluxe bedrooms, and 52 standard bedrooms, all ensuite.

The rooms will be split across four floors, but will integrate different care

services into a single retirement community, the document says.

“Informal discussions have taken place with City of York Council to ensure the

proposed care home delivers the services for the growing population of older people in York,” it adds.

The care home will offer things like a cafe/bar for residents, a cinema, a hair and beauty salon, a gym and a therapy room.

The planning agents also say the Acomb Road site offers a perfect location, as it is easily accessible to the city centre and the wider area.

Based on previous projects, they say the new home will create 30 to 40 full jobs when the home is up and running, as well as the construction jobs during building work.

When the sale was announced, Crown Care’s managing director Denise Stephenson said: “Crown Care prides itself on providing thriving homes with a philosophy of care that puts the needs of our residents at the centre of everything we do and how we do it.”

The plans also include gardens and landscaped areas, and what is described as “a series of linked external spaces” to provide different areas for residents from a south-facing terrace near the main lounge to a sensory garden with raised beds and woodland walks to the south and west of the building.

Crown Care has already said it will be working towards opening the facility in 2018, once it has approval in place, and should start recruiting staff later this year.
