A FIRE damaged community centre in Sherburn-in-Elmet has reopened.
The Harold Mills Community Centre has been out of action since a fire spread from an outbuilding in April 2016, destroying the roof. On Thursday locals and councillors celebrated its reopening after a £60,000 rebuild.
Cllr Richard Musgrave from Selby District Council said: “I’m delighted to see the Harold Mills Community Centre reopened, fulfilling the promise we made to rebuild it immediately after the fire.
“The council has worked closely with local residents to identify how they used the old centre and understand exactly what facilities are important to them.
“This new centre is a modern, fit for purpose and will serve the surrounding community for many years to come. We are looking forward to seeing it be a well-used and thriving community hub once again.”
The layout of the centre has been changed to make it easier for people to make the most of the facilities, and the colour scheme has been brightened up, after feedback from people nearby.
