FOUR buildings in York, from a historic theatre to a redeveloped public toilet site, have been shortlisted for a prestigious regional architecture award.

The Royal Institute of British Architects - RIBA - has announced the shortlist for its Yorkshire awards in 2017, and York developments make up four of the 13 finalists.

Clementhorpe Maltings, the first phase of the Derwenthorpe development, York Theatre Royal, and redeveloped public toilets in St Leonard’s Place have all made it onto the list of buildings being considered for the prize.

Chairman of the Yorkshire judging panel, Vijay Taheem, said “Our region received many excellent entries, and all very worthy of consideration in many aspects. The short listing presented lively discussions and debates, and those shortlisted are considered to embrace a holistic contribution to all aspects of the design in creating excellence towards our architectural heritage.”

York entries vary from the large-scale redevelopment of the Theatre Royal, which has been on its site since 1744 and has undergone several alterations over the years; to fitting a modern building with public conveniences and a retail unit in a small space beside Bootham Bar.

Also up for the award, Clementhorpe Maltings is a residential development in former industrial buildings that had to contend with flood risks and unstable buildings, and the 64-home first phase of development on the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust’s Derwenthorpe site.

Rievaulx Abbey’s new visitor centre and museum near Helmsley has made it on to the shortlist, as well as a new private home called Cunelands House near Malton.

The shortlisted buildings will be visited by the judging panel in March, with the winners of a RIBA Yorkshire Award announced at a ceremony in Hull on May 25.

One of the winners to receive the prestigious Building of the Year Award and other special category awards include Project Architect of the Year, the Sustainability Award, and Client of the Year.

Regional winners will also be considered for a RIBA National Award, and could go on to be shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of 2017.
