COMMUNITY-MINDED volunteers got their hands dirty by planting fruit trees to create a substantial orchard for residents at a sheltered housing site in York.

Over two fruitful days, volunteers from the charity Edible York and the Goodgym York group planted 12 trees to add to the eight trees that had already been planted at Alex Lyon House, in Fifth Avenue, Tang Hall.

Students from the University of York and runners from GoodGym rallied to help plant the trees and then lay down a thick layer of wood chip around the trees to suppress weeds and retain moisture in the ground.

Bill Eve, from Edible York, said: “A total of 20 trees fruit trees, pears, plums and apples, have now been planted.

“I am so grateful to everyone for working so very hard to make sure all 24 cubic meters of wood chip were moved from the car park and laid around the trees.” Edible York supports the people of York to become closer to the food they eat, while Goodgym York is a project which gets runners to help out with community projects.
