THE Grand Opera House has held auditions for this summer's Stage Experience full-scale musical production in York.

Sixty seven young performers aged ten to 21 auditioned last Sunday for the two-week project, when the American show Fame will be staged under the guidance of a professional creative team led by director and choreographer Louise Denison.

Stage Experience will run from July 22, culminating in four public performances from August 3 to 5. Not only will performers be put through their singing, dancing and acting paces, but young and aspiring theatre technicians will participate in the project too, working with the professional team on sound, lighting, set, props and costumes.

Fame follows the path of a group of High School of Performing Arts students in New York from their admission to their graduation, charting their struggles with prejudice and substance abuse, their fears and their triumphs as they navigate the worlds of music, drama and dance. Among them are the fame-obsessed Carmen; ambitious actress Serena; wisecracking comedian/bad boy Joe; quiet violinist Schlomo; talented, dyslexic dancer Tyrone; determined actor Nick; overweight dancer Mabel and poor dancer Iris.
